Realtor group awards scholarships

Eight Central Florida high school students were among the 39 students who received college scholarships from the Florida Association of Realtors.

The students, who wrote essays on how a Realtor helps a community, received $5,000 scholarships for first place, $1,500 for second place and $500 for third place. Read more…

Fulbright scholarships restored to 7 Gaza students

The U.S. has reinstated the Fulbright scholarships of seven Gaza Strip students blocked by Israel from leaving the Hamas-ruled territory, according to a letter obtained by The Associated Press.

The students were informed Thursday that their scholarships for the upcoming academic year would be deferred because they couldn’t get out of Gaza, which Israel blockaded after Islamic Hamas militants seized power a year ago. Read more…

Chamber awards scholarships to six students

The Saipan Chamber of Commerce Tuesday awarded a series of academic scholarships to six deserving local students bound for college.

The six students faced stiff competition for the $1,500 scholarships-awarded based on interviews, essays and a host of academic and other criteria-after the Chamber’s education committee saw a spike in applicants over last year, with 32 prospective scholars and 28 who qualified for the interview. UW students earn graduate scholarships worth $4.5 million

The University of Waterloo is once again among the top three universities to receive scholarships from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

NSERC is awarding more than $4.5 million to UW student researchers in departments across the university. The research covers such topics as climate change to advances in wireless technology. Read more…

Dallas Event Raises $60,000 for Student Scholarships

The American Indian College Fund’s (the Fund) event at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, Texas on May 1 raised $60,000 for student scholarships and celebrated 40 years of tribal colleges.

Student scholarship recipient Trivia Afraid of Lightning (a member of the Miniconjou Band of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe) spoke to the gathered business leaders, American Indian educators, and donors about the challenges she faced as an American Indian student and how a chance at education transformed her life. PhD scholarships ‘below poverty line’

The dollar value of PhD scholarships is “in freefall” and projected to drop below the poverty line later this year, the Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations says.

Figures released by the council yesterday show that the weekly stipend rate for Australian Postgraduate Awards projected for the December quarter of this year $385 will fall below the projected Henderson poverty line for the same period. And that figure is for a single person with no dependents. The stipend, which does not vary according to circumstances, is well below the poverty line of $581 for a person with two dependents. Ministry offering new scholarships to foreign students

The education ministry is working with several US colleges to attract US students to take part in its three learning programs

Gaza students lose scholarships after Israel refuses visas

The US state department has withdrawn its Fulbright scholarships from seven Palestinian students from Gaza because they are unable to obtain Israeli permission to leave the small strip of land.

The students were told in a letter from the US consulate general in Jerusalem, dated Thursday and seen by the Guardian, that the state department “will not be able to finalise your Fulbright Student Scholarship for 2008″. No explanation was given, but the students were told to apply again next year, when they would be given “priority consideration” but with no guarantee that the scholarships would be awarded again.
